UFO Reports: January 2009, part 1
www.examiner.com/x-2363-Chicago-UFO-Examiner~y2009m1d13-UFO-Reports-January-2009-part-1
Seventy reports of UFOs were filed in the first eight days of January 2009 with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). One incredible video capture by a New Jersey teen vacationing in California was one of nine triangular-shaped craft seen over eight states.
Other sighting types during this time period included bright lights in the sky, continuing reports of a bright flash of light in the sky, cigar-shaped, oval-shaped and one report of a v-shaped craft in the city of Chicago. A selected number of these cases were arranged by type of sighting.
These individual reports are unedited.
Bright lights in the sky

Twenty-one reports of bright objects in the sky were reported in the first eight days of January 2009 to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) database.

I was facing north on my driveway talking on the telephone. It was a clear night, and unseasonably warm for December. In the sky north of Benton I saw a orb of light descend quickly towards the ground. It moved at a speed which is unlike I have ever seen any typical aircraft. The light was a solid bright yellow, and had to be within a mile from where I was standing. The craft moved rapidly down, and abruptly stopped still above a tree line. It wasn't too far from the ground when it stopped, probabley 50' above the trees. The aircraft then flashed slightly brighter, and disappeared. No noise. No trail. It vanished.

I went outside in my back yard to have a cigarette and saw a very bright "star" in the sky almost due west of me. As I was watching it, it appeared to move back and forth in an unusual way. I became intrigued and continued to watch it to make sure that it: wasn't an airplane or helicopter, wasn't a satellite or star, and was truly moving strangely [the eyes can play tricks on you if you stare at something too long].
After another 5-10 minutes I could tell that it was definitely not an airplane or a helicopter. I had my wife come out to double-check me to see if it was truly moving. She confirmed that it was.
The distance? Very hard to tell. At one point I watched an airplane fly directly in front of it. Due to this fact, I would surmise that it was out over the ocean.
More about the movement: it moved left and right, up and down and, apparently, farther away and closer [it would grow fainter then brighter]. It would stay in one place for awhile and then move in an intermittent and abrupt manner. Sometimes it would oscillate back and forth or up and down, and sometimes it would zip in one direction and stay there. It seemed to be heading in a general northwest direction [out over the ocean]. My wife probably best described the movement, "It was like a bug."
It also seemed to sparkle with different colors, red and maybe blue, but this was difficult to confirm.
After approximately 51 minutes, I lost sight of the object as it finally moved low on the horizon and behind a tree.
My feelings and reactions? Well, I am a scientist by training so, while being very intrigued, I tried to be as objective in my observations as possible. All I can say for sure is that it was a "flying" object that I couldn't identify.
I did take pictures and a short video with my camera but realistically they are of no use. It just appears as a point of light on a black background.

In my back yard having my morning smoke the sun was not up but the sky had light. A Very Bright Light traveling north to south, no sound moving at a fast rate and disappeared. I tried to get a picture but my settings were off so the image came out dark. you can still see the light but the picture does nothing for the size and brightness I saw. I have never seen anything like it.

Jan. 4, 2009 - Multiple crafts flying in formation
So I was outside having a smoke when I cought a bit of reflicted lite. Like you might see off of an airplane. I watch the sky every day so I have become very good at picking out the real from not real. If you wanna look at it like that. Plane or not plane. As I continued to focus on this tiny bit of light more and more began moving around one another like a flock of birds. Some would break off and do a sharp movement in any direction then back to the group. They were headed directly overhead in a west by north west direction from Aroura to Denver. Then out of my line of sight. Not like they vanished still in broad daylight just out of my view. I was extatic! I am still not positive on the total of craft I believe no less than 30 that I could group up but no more than 50. This was my first real life encounter with this style craft. However I had see hundreds in a report not to long ago from Mexico. Mexican military were folowing in jets hundreds of these smaller craft that moved in the same way. I was the only one there at the time which sucks. However it was broad day light any I will never not believe what I saw. No photos.

I was out in front of the house having a smoke when I walked out of the garage and saw a glowing green light about 20 degrees above horizon descending rapidly in an arc. It appeared large and so I assumed it was no more than a mile or two away. It seemed to go down in the vicinity of the Commonwealth Edison plant on the Des Plaines river in Romeoville. There was a low-flying plain flying toward it as it fell. There were fresh chemtrails in a generally east to west pattern at the time. Two planes made low passes over the area in the next few minutes.

On January 4, 2009 at approximately 10:05 p.m. I saw an object in the sky from my window in my home. I live in Tinley Park, Illinois. I was sitting in the living room reading at the time. I saw the object flying in the same location on 2 different times.
The first time I saw the object I was by myself in my living room looking out of the window. The second time I saw the object I called a family member and the family member saw the object as well. The first time I saw the object It looked rather odd and thats what made me notice it. When I first saw it-I remember saying to myself,"WOW-This can't be." It went away but came back several min. later and I called my family member in the room. When I saw it the second time it came again from behind a cloud. I noticed the white light first-it was so clear and large. As the object glided more close is when I was able to see the red and green lights on its sides.
It appeared to have a white large flashing light in the middle (the light was very large-almost consuming the whole aircraft) with red and green lights on the sides of it. The white light was flashing brightly and the red and green lights were flashing. I originally felt that it was a air plane or helicopter. But I never seen an airplane or helicopter with a rather large white light and 2 red and green lights on the side and it was flying rather low and It wasnt making any noises. It appeared to be gliding. It was flying so low that I was able to see it very clearly. It was rather fascinating to see. The object finally glided over my home and I didnt see it anymore.
It was an amazing site to see. Im usually a skeptic but this was rather unusual and something I will never forget.

I was traveling south on 350 E, headed toward S.R. 26, on my way to Sharpsville, to visit a friend, when a BRIGHT BRIGHT orange sparkly light in the western sky, south of Kokomo, caught my eye. I pulled off to the side of the road for a few minutes and watched it. It appeared to be hanging right over another friends house, who lives at approx. 700 W and 300 N in Tipton County.
It appeared to be below approximately 2500 feet in elevation, at about a 30% angle from the horizon. It was VERY bright. Brighter that even any landing lights I have see aimed directly at me. I immediately knew this wasn't a conventional aircraft. The light was a distinct orange color. There was a LARGE chevron shaped object DIRECTLY above the OBOL. I mean they could almost touch they were so close. And there were "rays" for lack of a better description, radiating from the chevron to the OBOL.
IT was REALLY fantastic to see. I watched for approx 5 minutes. It never moved. It didn't go up, or down or come closer to me or retreat from me. I finally decided I had to get to my original destination so I left. When I returned to the area a few hours later, it was gone. There was no sound to the craft at all.
Weather conditions were as follows: 24° (-4° C), wind E 10MPH Barometer 30.04, Dewpoint 16° (-9°C), Wind Chill 15° (-9°C) VISIBILITY 10.0 MILES. The Crescent Waning Moon was just above the area of the sighting in the western sky at about a 45 degree angle from the horizon. It was partially hazed over with a high altitude skud deck that was moving in. I felt very excited when I saw this. My first instict was that this was not anything conventional nor was it any known celestial object. The color was that DISTINCT OBOL orange from March and April of last year. There is NOTHING in the sky that color.

It was new years and i wanted to get some pictures of fireworks for my 8 yr old duaghter Tai.i had turned of the porch light so i could get better pictures of the fireworks, but it was hard for me to see the switch on my camera,as i was messing with the switch the firewporks stoped poping ang i looked up, when i did i noticed three orange orbs flying slowly in a northen direction there was no sound i relized what i was seeing and screamed for my wife and duaghter they came and i remembered that i had a video setting on the camera thats when i started video taping i have 4 different vidoes from that night.
we counted thirteen flying orbs the never stoped they just kind of slowly flew they started on one side of the sky and went completly across it, i then called my mom,and friend corey blanchard.corey was in town and was able to see one from the side and said they looked to be 3000 to 5000 feet high, but that would mean that the size of those things was huge ,i thought they was about 500 to 1000 feet high,my wife got in touch wife my mother and sister inlaw they also seen them, they started to slowly stop coming they would start on one harizon and fly to the other as they stop showing up i went inside and started watching my videos but my nefwew stayed up at my moms house who lives north of me and got some vidoe also and a still picture of them making a tryangle.it was the most amazing thing i have ever saw.i have one really good one of two over the lights in the subdivision. the camera i was useing is not a video taping unit its a digetal camera with video option
Maine
Jan. 3, 2009
During my morning routine I drink my coffee and smoke acigarette or two on my rear deck at home. I always watch the sky for shooting stars and satellites and generally admire the stars. On clear nights here in western maine we have an outstanding view of the stars.
At first it appeared to be a star in the distance rapdily flashing white and trailing what looked like 2 orange tentacles of light. I watched it for a few minutes and then saw it move and thought, what the heck is that. It would move occasionally in rounded sweeping movements and I saw it move in a 90 degree movement downward and to a sudden stop. The best description I can give is that with the naked eye it moves alot like a kite would up up the sky. I took a couple pictures but it was too dark and the object is too distant. It appears like it is up over Quebec somewhere. When I got my binoculars to look at it I was astonished.
At many points it looks like a 2 disc craft with a central core connecting the two discs, mostly green halo surround the entire craft and rapidly flashing white light around the top disc with random bright reds flashing in the white area, on the bottom disc it is mostly orange and green lights, no red flashing in this area. When it moves (watching with binoculars) it spins rapidly almost like looking at a laser pointer being moved around a white screen. Looping and spinning almost like my hands were shaking. So I stabilized the binocs and sure enough, it was not me.
It rapidly circles when it moves then suddenly stops. I just went out to look and watch again for a few minutes before writing this line and it is still there even though the sky is brightening for dawn. One thing to note is there is an extraordinary number of shooting stars this morning, I have personally seen 16 so far. This object is not a plane, if fact one flew by in the general sky area, not too closely, I watched it approach and fly by and I have to believe they had to see this object, it is certainly bright enough and large enough. It is now somewhat lower on the northern horizon and more difficult to see.
I did wake my wife at 5:30 to come out and look with me to confirm I am not crazy. She also sees it and because it is cold outside she went into the bedroom and watched from the window. I did too for a short time but the screen makes it less clear to see details. I am exhilarated by this experience and wanted to share it with somebody who would not think I am insane. One hour now and it is still there but into the trees now that it is so much lower on the horizon.

New Years eve 2009 appx. 12:10 am while lighting fireworks at midnight, a fireball streaked across the sky from west to east over south Bozeman,MT.
It was at about 2000' AGL travelling at about 300 mph. It was completely silent and travelling level just below the clouds. Many people saw it, including several completely sober individuals as well as some young children. After about 30-40 seconds it disappeared into the clouds. My first thought was that it was a meteor, but it was travelling level at 2000', not decending, and much too slow to be a meteor.
It was completely silent and had NO flashing aircraft-type lights on it at all.
We all, including myself just watched it disappear into the clouds. I thought to myself, cool first contact!

At 11:38 pm, Jan 3, 09, driving east in Pitman, NJ 08071, skies were clear but not able to see the stars for the town lights, but saw large object swiftly come straigt down from the sky.
large green/yellow light came straight down from the top of my windshield to the treetops in the distance (about 2/3 of my windshield). I screamed out loud to my friend "oh my god, what was that?", she didn't see it. It was not a falling star, this came straight down very fast, in a second, and there was no trail/tail.

At 20:35 my wife went outside to have a smoke, she came right back inside to tell me about the strange lights outside. We live very close to the local airport, so weird lights in the sky don't realy phase me, But the look in my wife's eyes made me rush to see.
I look up to the NE sky to see Five very bright lights, keep in mind that i have an unobstructed view of the horizon around my home. no cell towers, no chimeny stacks, nothing. To see five red lights in the sky in such a configuration saw startling to say the least.
the lights were in a backwards L formation, 1 high, 4 across. the lower 2 inside lights started to oscilate back and from each other. at one point a helicopter of unknown owership headed twords the lights, at that point they started to leave the area, heading in an east direction. people say the lights look like they were falling but technicaly if they were going away from you they would apear as if they were dropping.
this was the local newspaper's take of the incident

Parents called and told me to go outside and look up. The Dog had alerted them to a formation of 5 Red Lights in the sky while he was out doing his business. The group of Red Lights were also in formation and when I saw them, but they dropped from 5 to 3 to 1 very quickly each shooting off in a separate direction. I have video of 2 of them together which I hope to upload and it is EXACTLY like what Event ID 14785 described. They were floating like nothing I've ever seen. It looked like the lights of each craft were vertical with one light on top and one light below almost like a vertical bar with lights just at the tips. Point of reference, I grew up 500 yards from a Heli-pad and live 2 miles from the Morristown, NJ airport. I see normal air traffic all day and night everyday. These were not planes or helicopters or like anything I've ever seen.
Watched one zig zag away with the solid red light occasionally going dark and then popping up elsewhere all lit up again. Lights did not flash in typical aircraft fashion and they really did just "Float" and not move in typical straight lines.
The event ended with one craft coming back over me and changing to all white lights. It shifted direction very quickly and jumped around a bit before going dark and heading West over Giralda Farms.
Called the Madison,NJ PD and they said they had some reports of "something" by the airport but had nothing else to say. Parents called the Morris Township Police who said they had received many calls. Township Police spoke to the Morristown Police who said they looked into it and said it was just someone playing a "prank with flares".
Maybe it was somehow man made but it was still an incredibly exciting thing to watch.
ps
Spoke to a friend shortly after and after telling my story he said his brother in law was at a party in late Nov in Bernardsville,NJ and saw the exact same thing.

Took my dog out to see a dog friend of his that was in a vehicle in my driveway ( his owner was in my house ). As I opened the door to the van fast moving lights caught my eye and I looked up. Across the street from my house is an empty field with a treeline at the farthest end of it which faces my house. There were two very bright round looking balls of light flying at a very high rate of speed, one directly in front of the other. I looked as hard as I could to see what details I could see which was difficult because they were moving so fast. I saw no blinking lights at all and looked for these intensely because there is a lot of air traffic in this area and wanted to be certain of what I was seeing. Also there was absolutely no noise being made by these lights which I am almost always able to hear on planes( sometimes the planes noise is heard before the plane is in sight and sometimes long after the plane has been seen ).
But I heard no noise from these lights at any time before, during, or after they were in my field of vision. It happened so quickly and they were only witin my sight for 20 seconds or so. I was trying to make some kind of sense of what they could be especially when I first saw them.At first I thought maybe they were flares of something " fired " by someone but it became clear that these objects were flying under their own power.
For the time I was able to see them, they stayed in their configuration one in front of the other until I couldn't see them anymore.I can't say how far away the were because I am terrible with measuring in this way, however I could show someone. I went into my house and told my significant other and our friend what I had seen and described to them exactly what I had seen. The sky tonight is very gray and overcast with light snow falling. There are no stars or moon out tonight.
When I take my dog out I always look at the sky and have become very familiar with how it normally looks and what is usual to be in it. These objects were not usual. I feel as though I have witnessed something not typical.

On the above date I was driving west on Hawthorne Pkwy in the Cleveland Metroparks South Chagrin reservation. As I approached Harper Ridge picnic area, I noticed a very bright, white light in the west-south west sky.
I had originally seen and reported this same type of light back in June of 2008 but during that incident the light dimmed and within ten seconds or so was gone and did not return.
I thought to myself that it would be weird if this light went out like the light in '08 and just to see what would happen I shined the spotlight of the patrol car I was driving at the light. When I turned off the spotlight, the light in the sky dimmed and went out. I immediately turned around and drove into Harper Ridge, parked and grabbed my video camera, cell phone and binoculars.
For approximately the next ten to twelve minutes the light in the sky randomly dimmed, went out completely and came back on, all while remaining motionless. When the light would go out it would come back on in the same place. At times the light was so bright that it lit up the clouds surrounding it(like the moon on a cloudy night), although these "flares" seemed to be the exception rather than the rule; The light mostly stayed the brightness of a bright star. Whenever it dimmed and went out there were no other lights in that area either flashing or steady. Through binoculars the light appeared to have a definite center and did not look like a spotlight or diffused light from below.
After about ten to twelve minutes I decided to drive to a nearby golf course that provides a clearer view of the sky. While driving to the course, the light was out of my view and by the time I got there(about 5 mins), the light was gone. I stayed at the course for about another 30 mins but the light did not return. I called my wife and my sister to have them witness this event while I was at Harper Ridge but neither could see the object from where they were.
I was able to capture about two and a half minutes of video of this object. In the videos, the light is visible above and to the right of lights from the city of Solon. Even though the sky was not very cloudy and was bright that night, in the videos the sky is just black. Also, the light starts to dim toward the end of both videos(after the first it stayed out for about 30-45 seconds then came back; after the second I drove to the golf course) but neither video catches the light coming back on.
Just a note of caution, if the audio comes through you may hear some coarse language from me. If you're offended by that you may want to lower the volume on your computer.

I noticed the glowing red balls in the northern sky (mid horizon) around 6:30 pm tonight, on Jan. 1, 2009 as I was walking up the front steps to our home. The glowing brightness caught my eye. I look at the sky often and pretty much know the constellations that are normal for this time of year. This was a odd sight in a normally dark spot in the sky. Temp in the Pittsburgh Pa. area is in the mid 20's I believe, and except for a few scattered clouds, it’s a clear, crisp night.
There were 2 of them at 1st, moving very slowly in unison, almost as if they were attached by an invisible string. They were seperated a good distance apart although I can not fairly judge that distance except to say that it was maybe the distance from the top to the bottom of the Big Dipper. I immediately called for my husband to come out and see and he just said "what the heck is that!" It was obvious we were seeing something very different. They were moving way too slow for a plane, made no sound and did not blink. They just looked like small red fireballs or large red colored stars. I’d guess they were about 3 times the size of the North star. (In my mind then, I wondered if it was someone flying a hot air balloon at night with a large flair of some sort!)
We watched them move southward slowly in the sky for about 5-6 min. even going into the back yard to see them better. Then they just disappeared. We originally thought they went behind cloud cover, but the clouds were sparse and would have emerged quickly. But they were gone in an instant. We kept looking for them and waiting for them to reappear but they didn't, so my hubby & I went in. I went outside several more times to look again and as I was going out the door maybe 5 min. later, I saw another single one moving out of the northern sky again coming toward the area of our home. It seemed to be lower at first that the other 2.
I called for the hubby again and he came out and told me to grab the binoculars since his telecsope was put away for the winter. I brought out both pair and we both looked at this "thing" but it just looked like a red fireball in the lens. It moved slowly as well and it also disappeared in the exact spot that the other 2 did. It almost looked like it fizzled out when it got to that same spot, as we were both watching it with the binoculars. We told out daughter about it and she told me to do a google search to see if anyone else saw anything or if there was something going on that would explain it. When I did the search, all I entered was "Pittsburgh Pa. Jan. 1, 2009. red balls in sky". Immediately, I got a "hit" that someone in Indiana saw exactly the same thing we did, but I believe the time was a little different.
Reading on, I see where people all over the world saw the same thing. Someone posted a short video of exactly what we saw on UFO Stalker dot com but there was only one on their video. We only saw 3 of them but others have seen many more. Perhaps there were more & we only caught the tail end, but we definitely saw something that was unlike anything we've ever seen before and it was nothing short of amazing. And no one will tell me it was a weather balloon either! I wonder if now I'll start making mountains out of my mashed potatoes??? LOL So glad others have seen it as well.

at 7:30 pm husband went outside to get something out of a vehicle and saw an extremely bright light far below the stars in the western sky above the treeline. he called me and our 3 kids out to see (the show Kath and Kim had just started)as it was zigzagging and moving. at first we thought it was a really BIG, extremely bright star really low in the sky. the moon was in the opposite direction to our backs from the object, and was towards the New Johnsonville area. as it is cold outside, we eventually came in to look out our upstairs window.
It would occasionally move towards us, and then away, and at one point separated into 3 bright white lights, and then went back to one and started having rotating red lights on it. everyone watching would complain of their vision messing up while watching this, as it would go blurry and the surroundings would disappear it seemed, so we would have to look away to refocus. this event lasted right at 1 hour, and at the last 3 minutes moved out of range of seeing through the upstairs window where it could only be seen from the front yard outside, then it disappeared behind the treeline very rapidly and was gone. seeing things in the sky here has about become a common occurrence so we were not surprised at what we saw, or that there was something unusual in the sky here. We have saw the same thing on more than this occasion, along with other types before.
There were at most times 3 witnesses to the event, and 5 saw it total in it's one hour time.

Jan. 8, 2009 - Choppers approach bright object
We got a call from my daughters boyfriend who was out on his apt balcony smoking with friend few miles away and saw bright lit up object with pulsating green-red and blue lights, the helicopters would go towards it with a spotlight and would turn back not getting to close and approach fron the other side- then there was about 4 choppers taking turns- with big spotlights, when they would turn around from it, we would see the spotlights, it continued for an hour or so then we went inside and came back out and it had moved up higher in the sky, we were looking at it with a rifle telecope its lights were brilliant and bright and could not really make out a shape cause of the brightness - but looked like a prism. Last we saw it was higher and you could still see the lights but smaller--the choppers stopped - I think it was at a higher altitude they could not reach it. last time this year we saw something as well - but this time it was all of us; me, my husband and three kiddos plus the other people on that apt balcony. It was somewhere over 249 and the Sam Houston tollway or 290 area- far NW houston.

My husband and I were doing our morning hot tub ritual when we noticed a bright white light moving across the sky. We see satellites all the time and thought nothing of it till it stopped and headed in the reverse direction. It stopped again and hovered a moment. Then it started moving in a circular motion. Then it began to zig zag, looked like a firefly moving on my video tape.
It moved as if it was playing a game back and forth in mutiple directions. Satellites do not do this. Have seen this once before out here, but I was alone and no camera. This time my husband and I both saw and video taped it. This went on until we then noticed the second shape that was just like it. In the distance. This went on until dawn and even after the sun came up and all stars were no longer visible these two objects were. The kids woke up and I had to come in and when I returned they were gone when we came back out. My tape is 8mm so I cannot email it unfortunately.
